2nd Alarm Kittery,Me
The first alarm came in at 4:42 a.m. for 27 Wentworth St., followed by a
second alarm at 5:02 a.m. Fire fighters encountered a large volume of fire
on the first floor, then almost immediately discovered heavy fire had
erupted on the second floor as well.
The 3 story building had balloon construction, allowing the fire to spread
quickly up through the walls of the building, built around 1800. The
balloon
construction lacks fire stops on each floor.
All Kittery fire units responded to the fire, as did a York Fire
Department
engine, tanker and air supply/rehab truck, an Eliot engine and tanker, and
a
Portsmouth Naval Shipyard ladder truck. Also New Castle, Portsmouth, York
Beach and Ogunquit fire departments also responded to assist at the fire,
while the Rye,NH FD covered the Walker Street fire station in Kittery.
A York firefighter injured his ankle in a fall while fighting the fire.
Firefighters brought the fire under control at 7:52 a.m.
